Explicit Instruction
these are the key skills, this is the template that you follow to impart those key skills to kids in a way that the kids are involved in their learning, understand how they are being taught, and are able to reflect on their learning'.skills-based and we need to virtually be providing kids with the stepping stones on a continuum for kids to achieve success in reading, writing.
What we ARE talking about is covering content in an effective manner where we continue to readdress concepts until they have been transferred from our students’ short term to long term memory. We want the knowledge and skills we are teaching to become automatised, so they can recall and apply these understandings as needed – otherwise why are we here?
In short the Explicit Teaching model consists of 3 major elements: -
· Warm-up – THE GAME BREAKER!
· I Do, We, Do, You Do
· Plough back
The warm up not only prepares students for the lesson to come, but it also settles them into the lesson’s routine and kick-starts tired brains to be ready for learning.
Students begin each lesson with a ‘Warm Up’ which focuses on moving student knowledge from short term to long term memory (automaticity) through a process of focused revision based on previous learning. The lesson then moves into the ‘I Do’ or initial instruction phase. During this part of the lesson the teacher explicitly explains and models the concepts to be taught. The ‘We Do’ phase then focuses on guided practice with students working with the teacher to apply the newly taught skills. This is followed by the ‘You Do’ phase which provides students with an opportunity to practice the skills independently. The final step is the ‘Wrap Up’ or ‘Plough Back’, when critical content is reviewed and reflected upon, student success evaluated and feedback provided.
