After visiting Haileybury, I have been busy writing and presenting writing warm ups for my students. Daily Writing Warm Ups accomodate all learners. Differentiation is an integral feature to this part of your lesson, as the complex sentence writing task is heavily scaffolded.
Daily Writing Warm Ups meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities as it is heavily scaffolded. Through each component of the writing exercise, students are offered examples and 'self-talk' of how to write a complex sentence. These examples can be copied in a 'write your own adventure' style activity. Conversely, my higher-order thinkers are encouraged to write their own complex sentence.
Any classroom should have on-going feedback, and these warm ups are continuously assessed and checked in-class. This enables students to gain immediate feedback and also means the differentiation of the task can be continuously adjusted according to the learners’ needs.
